March Madness is a term thrown around a ton this time of year. It is truly March Madness in the coaching world as well. This is a time where you are balancing a ton of tasks as you look to end your season strong. At VCU, we are playing in the CBI, so we are still in season mode in terms of our game preparation, practice schedule, travel, etc. As a staff, we have not changed our approach to games from the regular season to the CBI, so the games require a ton of long hours to get our players ready to play. In some regards, it is even more challenging because we are preparing for teams on short notice. For example, we found out on Selection Sunday that we would be in the CBI and we played a road game that Tuesday at George Washington. The short turn around did not leave a lot of time to get the team ready.
On top of the post season games, we are still actively recruiting and having prospects in for their official visits. Typically, we do not have prospects in during the season for visits, but with the signing period approaching April 14th, now is the best time to do this. As an assistant, I am also trying to squeeze in days to get on the road and visit our top 2011 prospects before the recruiting period ends in late April. This is a heavy time for recruiting and we are trying to get out as much as possible and make the most of our time on the road.
On campus, we are very active with our players and still spending a ton of time with our guys on their academics and personal development. The semester is over the halfway mark and we are working with our players daily to make sure they finish the semester strong, especially after having to miss some class for our road games this semester and the conference tournament. As you can see, this is an extremely busy time of year for a basketball coaching staff.
