Diary Series: Dave Wojcik, Assoc. Head Coach - Boise State
It is so true that the little things we do in life can have such an impact. I never thought turning in our suits for jerseys, would benefit our team so much.
Being down two players with injuries and our redshirts and walk-ons heading home for the Christmas break, we had a shortage of players. Having to still need to prepare for our next opponent we decided to have our coaching staff be the scout team. I really did my best to try to get out of it since it has been awhile since I have played the game... and for sure did not want to be sidelined with an injury during the holidays!
However, to my displeasure I had no choice and needed to take one for the team. I never imagined how much of an impact it would have on our team. Instead of seeing me as Coach Woj; teaching the game and letting the team know they needed to work harder; the players were able to see me in a different light after competing with me that day. The coaches scout team brought laughter and a different approach to our preparation for our upcoming games. The funniest part of the day was not only my game but that I played the center position standing only 5-foot-10 and was having to post up and go up against our 6-8 center.
In the end, this change in our game preparation helped us not
only with that particular game but also in the way our players now
see as a staff. They know we will do whatever it takes to make
this team successful; even if it means sacrificing our bodies.
For the record I did not miss a shot the entire practice and
no one on the scout team was injured, however, I must say my legs
are still recovering and hopefully will be ready to go when the
team returns to campus after the holidays!
Wishing everyone a very healthy and happy new year!
