Attitude.

Only a word but yet it encompasses so much and can be so valuable to a team, a staff and a program.

How you respond to adversity with a late game turnover? If you hang your head as a player the offense gains a greater advantage and momentum shifts with an easy transition basket. The key, teaching your guys the next play is the most important and not to live in the past, you can’t go back. Staying positive with your team, players don’t want to make mistakes and often coaches’ body language acts as a negative multiplier and compounds the turnover or poorly executed play. All we can do is tell them we believe in them, that’s why they are in the game and are attitude and reaction must be positive.

I’m sure you have heard it before but one of the only things you can control is your attitude. Every day is a phenomenal day. We all sometimes need to take a step back and look at life from a broader perspective.  We are blessed with the opportunity to mold and mentor young men in the game of basketball but more importantly in the game of life. How cliché but it could not be more true?  What kind of example are we setting if we aren’t positive and encouraging in all that we do?  Speaking with our players about making the right decisions, how to prepare for a test, how to read and execute a scouting report, to be responsible for their actions. Always striving to get better and if we as coaches are doing that , setting a great example, then the  pieces of our team grow and the positive attitude with in all of us  creates an environment conducive to winning!

The moral of the story is we are all fortunate to be coaching the game we love; there is no reason why every day cannot be our masterpiece as the great John Wooden said!
