NCDS: Jared Grasso, Asst. Coach - Iona
With Richmond coming to New Rochelle for our home opener there
was a great buzz in the air and a palpable excitement on
campus. After tough decisions in three road games to start
the year it was an opportunity for our kids to play in front of a
packed house and feel our great home court advantage.
As coaches we were very nervous knowing that Richmond was
undefeated and coming off an NCAA Tournament appearance last
season. Having coached against Richmond the last four years I knew
going in how well the Spiders executed and how difficult it would
be to prepare for them. For the first time all year we had a full,
healthy squad in practice and we had a very intense week of
practice and game preparation.
In what some long-time Iona fans called "the best game they have
seen in 25 years", we were able to outlast Richmond in an 81-77
double overtime thriller. What made it even more special was the
great crowd and student support we received. Our fans were really
our “Sixth Man” and contributed to a great win.
Richmond proved how talented they were on Saturday night, beating
No. 8 Purdue at the Chicago Invitational.
Go Gaels!
