Diary Series: Kevin McGeehan, Assoc. Head Coach - Richmond

Following up a historically successfully 2010-11 season in which we went to the Sweet Sixteen, won a record setting 29 games and graduated a group that contributed over 4,000 career points will be no small task.   I am fully confident in the group of people; coaches and players that we have and our commitment to be highly successful again.

Every person involved in this program knows that any success we are able to achieve will come with hard work and determination.  We had the good fortune of having two extremely talented scorers in Kevin Anderson and Justin Harper the past few years.  So, scoring won’t be quite as easy this year, however, I believe we will be very good at sharing the ball and may be able to get some baskets in transition as well.  This season, our defense will be what creates our identity, and I think this team has a chance to become very good on defense as the year progresses.

Darrius Garrett, Josh Duinker and Derrick Williams will anchor our frontcourt and should make us a better rebounding and more physical team.  All three are good defenders both on the interior and on the perimeter.  This defensive versatility is a huge asset in our switching defense.  Francis Martel and Greg Robbins will primarily play small forward however, Greg will play some guard as well.

In the backcourt, Cedrick Lindsay and Darien Brothers should make up one of the more potent backcourts in the league.  In addition, redshirt freshman Wayne Sparrow appears to be ready to help, as the year of getting stronger and learning really benefited him.   To be fair, to the freshmen and not put any undo pressure on them I will just say they are coming along well and I would expect a couple of them to contribute this year.

We are really excited to get started and mold this year’s Spiders into the best team they can be.
