Diary Series: Kevin McGeehan, Assoc. Head Coach - Richmond

Every year you have losses to graduation and this year those losses were significantly impactful for us as we graduated four starters who combined to score over 5,000 career points at Richmond.  And the losses couldn't merely be measured in stats. Less tangible are the hard games and experiences that our group last year went through in order to take us from eight wins to two NCAA appearances and an A10 title.  That group learned from mistakes together, experienced success and failure together and ultimately determined how to succeed together.

Which brings us to this year’s group, which is talented... and some have had a nice part in the success of the last two seasons.  However, many of this year’s edition of the Spiders had significantly different roles on last year’s team.  Some never really got a chance at all.  Now we are discovering who we are as a group once again this year. We are discovering who will score a big basket, who will take the lead down the stretch and bring us home, who will get a big rebound or block.  It is a team which is completely finding it‘s own identity.

I think we all feel good about a 6-2 start and wins over Rutgers and Wake.  What is important for this year’s team is that we continue to learn and discover who we are with each game, and to also look back at each game - regardless of outcome - and understand we have plenty to learn from.  This Friday, we will travel just down to Broad Street to play rival VCU. We will need to be incredibly focused in our preparation and determination.

I have complete confidence in our group continuing to learn daily in order to eventually succeed together.
