NCDS: Jay Young, Assoc. Head Coach - Stony Brook

A blown out Achilles by our head coach started the season and a blown out tire by our team bus ended it.  Our late season run to the America East championship game highlighted a roller coaster ride of a season!  Here is just a quick snap shot of some of the highs and lows of our year:

September 2010: Head Coach Steve Pikiell ruptures Achilles tendon in pickup game.

September 2010: Tommy Brenton dislocates kneecap in preseason workout – misses entire year.

October 2010: Practice Begins on October 15th.

November 2010: Marcus Rouse has knee surgery…misses several weeks of practice and first five games.

November 2010: Stony Brook wins its first major network television game with a 51-49 win over Monmouth on ESPN…game tipped off at 6:00 AM as part of ESPN’s 24 Hour College Hoops Tip-Off Marathon.

January 2011: Chris Martin undergoes knee surgery…misses 13 games.

January 2011: Shrouded by controversy, Head Coach Steve Pikiell is eliminated from “Shot’s from the Heart” (free throw shooting contest to benefit the American Heart Association) by Arizona’s Sean Miller.  Coach Pikiell actually made more free throws than Miller (23-22), but the Arizona head coach edged Pikiell in points 28-27.  Despite Coach Pikiell’s call for a rule review, Miller advances!

January 2011: Bryan Dougher scores his 1000th point vs. Albany on January 17th…Bryan would also become our all-time leader in three-point makes later in the month.

January 2011: Lenny Hayes scores 22 points in a loss at Maine on February 22nd…starts the rest of the season and averages 10 PPG in league play.

February 2011: In a nationally televised game on ESPNU, Stony Brook beat Maine 71-69 in overtime before a capacity crowd of 4,423 in the Stony Brook Arena.

March 2011: The Seawolves advance to the America East championship game with a 69-47 win over No. 1 seed Vermont.

March 2011: The Seawolves lose to Boston University 56-54 in the America East Championship Game on March 12th at BU in the team’s fourth national television broadcast of the year, this time on ESPN2…bus tire blows out on way home from game, and we wait 3.5 hours for road service.

We head for April recruiting, and we can’t wait to get started with our offseason workouts.  Our guys are already getting to work and preparing for the 2011-12 season.  We are hungry to get back to the Championship game…this time with no blowouts.
