NCDS: Randy Peele, Head Coach - Winthrop ("A Great Story")

By: Randy Peele, Head Coach - Winthrop

Things are going very well for the Winthrop Eagles right now.  We have won eight of our last nine games and our record is now 13-10 and 9-4 in the Big South.  We have won five straight games since our game with UNC Asheville.  Three of those wins have come on the road against Gardner-Webb, VMI and Liberty.  We had our biggest win of the season on Saturday, January 30th, where we beat Coastal Carolina 67-64, handing them one of their only two conference losses.

But for a minute, I'd like to take time to talk about a player of ours, Reggie King.  We have a very strong interest in Reggie King in what is truly a great human interest story.  Reggie is a walk-on for us who has earned the right to be on scholarship next year.  He is a wonderful young man with a dynamic personality.

Reggie grew up in the projects of Chicago, Illinois.  He went through a period of time where he was in and out of group homes in Chicago.  All in all, it was really quite sad.  Keep in mind that Reggie is a young man... and his family had gone through several severe hardships already.

Reggie was playing basketball in community leagues in Chicago while living in a group home.  At that time, he played basketball with the children of a woman named Michelle.  Reggie would call Michelle, making emotional pleas and asking her to adopt him and his younger brother.  But Michelle had two children of her own and, unfortunately, Michelle would tell Reggie that she just couldn't adopt both Reggie and his brother.  He, Reggie, felt such a strong connection to his brother that he didn't do it.  However, it became so bad that Reggie worked it out and was adopted by Michelle.  She later moved to Cleveland, Ohio and she now lives in Asheville, North Carolina.

I couldn't be happier for Reggie.  He enrolled in Christ School in Arden, North Carolina, which is a great academic school.  He graduated with a 2.9 GPA.  While there he and his team at Christ School won three state championships.  Now he's a big part of what we do here at Winthrop day in and day out.  He's a great example for any athlete, or person for that matter.

Reggie King is a winner. We love Reggie King.

And we are proud that he is a part of the Winthrop Family.
