NCDS: Randy Peele, Head Coach - Winthrop

By: Randy Peele, Head Coach - Winthrop

I trust that everyone had a Happy Thanksgiving.  It is always great to spend time with family and friends.  We actually gave our team two days for Thanksgiving, because we had a week off.  That was the first time in 26 years of coaching that I have had two days off.

We are currently 2-2 after our first 4 games.  The two games that we won were absolutely incredible comebacks that gave our fans a great experience.  Our first game of the year against Limestone we were down by 7 with 2:19 to go and won.  We stole the ball on a skip pass and laid it in at the buzzer.  Our second win was against USC Upstate.  We were down by 13 with 6:19 to go and won by 4.

Our two losses were against very talented teams.  We lost to the College of Charleston and Clemson.  The College of Charleston loss was a 2-point game with 3:52 to go.  We just struggled to score down the stretch.

I really like the potential of this team.  We must learn to play extremely hard every day.  Our issues revolve around our ability to score.  We have only scored 60 points once this year.  Right now we are not making enough shots in a grind out game of execution.  We have won both games, because we have played small and pressed.  We play with more energy and seem to shoot better when we are in transition.  In turn we have speeded the game up and created quicker shots and forced turnovers.

This is a very big week in that we have two league games with Radford and High Point visiting Winthrop tonight (Dec. 3rd) and Dec. 5th.

Thank you for your interest in Winthrop Basketball.
